Houston – Doctors can’t believe retired MLB player Drew Robinson survived after putting a gun to his head on a lonely dark night.
Robinson may have lost an eye, but he gained a new lifelong courage. He’s now teaming up with his psychiatrist through a new foundation called Better World to help everyone get mental health care.
He has played baseball all his life and now values his successful baseball career even more. Robinson played with Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals, but his life is alarmingly faltered after he injured his arm.

“I call them the three components of the recipe for disaster where at the end of the 2019 season I had an injury at the end of the season that needed surgery and then they were eventually released with two months left in the season so I was sent home and really just kind of terrified that my career would end,” Robinson explains.
He says he doesn’t know who he was without baseball. After he cut off his fiancée, Robinson felt lonely and lost at the start of the pandemic. He didn’t think he could handle the matter anymore and took action to end his life. His unsuccessful attempt ended up fueling his passion for fuel.

“It’s a very extreme situation right after I tried, I survived physically, somehow! On paper, I shouldn’t have been here, I shouldn’t have gotten past it. For me, there was nothing left to lose. I was supposed to lose Be here. And yet So right away, I felt like I could use all of these things that I’ve had through my life experience, my journey, and everything that I’ve tried to use in a positive way to try to help people not feel that way,” he said.
Robinson truly is a returning baby! After signing with the San Francisco Giants, he made his first home run with the team, which is more important than ever, as he now had to play with only one eye after attempting suicide. He soon decided to take a different set of skills off the field and is now a mental health advocate for the Giants.
“I myself am acting as a bridge between the players and our psychologists and our professionals to try and encourage them that this is a very useful and very rare resource – basically an on-demand therapist and just getting to know it is a sign of strength, not weakness, which is really encouraging. It’s something that the Giants have invested in because they know it’s useful,” says Robinson.
Dr. Sam Zand helped Robinson after his suicide attempt. He believes we can all learn from his dramatic transformation.
“It’s not what we do with the traumas or the stresses that we’re going through, but how we deal with them, and the growth that Drew has shown in the last two, three years is phenomenal, because he’d be the first to say, ‘We still have some difficulties, but we all do.’ It really is. What we’re trying to share is that we all go through a mental health journey, but can we ask for the help we need, can we be there for ourselves,” stated Dr. .
They want everyone to feel empowered when asking for help.
“When we hold things back, not share them with our loved ones or a professional, we start making up stories about our lives that are not true. And these perspectives we hold onto can be very frustrating to allow negative self-talk to fester. So, the strength that Drew has shown is just to be Being honest and honest with yourself and others, so that we don’t have to nurture any of the negative self-thoughts we have and to be able to normalize that we’re going through something, and that’s fine,” explains Dr. Zand.
Many people make sure they exercise their bodies. However, Robinson hopes you’ll consider training your brain because it works for him. “I just take time to process it. I spend an hour a week, two hours a week. I do my self-care routine in the morning or afternoon, and I just find my efficiency in it and being my most authentic self and being unapologetically myself,” Robinson says with a smile.
