Bryce Young’s NFL Draft prospects haunted by questions about his size — and that’s about him

October is too early to talk about the NFL draft, but let’s face it: some of these teams (looking specifically at you, Carolina PanthersThere is not much left to play for. In the coming weeks, more and more fan bases will start looking forward to the off season as their teams take losses and sink into futility.

Few teams will be looking for a quarterback in the franchise in the draft category for next year. Alabama might have this guy under center now. Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones and Galen Hurts They’ve all been crimson and white in recent seasons, and now Bryce Young is gearing up to be the next caller in Alabama.

Young people may be the best of them all. He’s a pocket wizard and easily one of the most talented shooters in the country. He was able to do whatever the Alabama offensive required of him, a unit coordinated by former NFL coach Bill O’Brien. Young won the Heisman Cup last season In only his first year as a rookie, with 4,872 passing yards and 47 passing touchdowns to line up with three more points on the ground. From a skills perspective, Young appears to have all the goods to be a long-term quarterback in the NFL.

However, analysts did not fully agree on Young’s draft. His size (listed at 6 feet 194 pounds on the Alabama list) will raise some concern among people who prefer taller, more steady passersby in their pockets. However, Young seems to offer enough high-level passing traits that translate into the current aesthetic of the NFL game. Young’s legs are a weapon, but his arm is the driving force of what makes him a potential best player in the 2023 NFL Draft.

People who cover college football know how good Young is – and he showed it all the time Alabama lost 52-49 to Tennessee the end of the previous week. Crimson Tide dropped that game even though Young managed 455 yards and two touchdowns at 8.8 yards in an effort. Without Young putting the insult on his back for driving at once, Alabama could have walked off the field by Tennessee. Seth Galina, a college football analyst at Pro Football Focus, is optimistic about Young and his potential to be the face of the NFL franchise.

“Young is one of the smartest potential midfield players we’ve seen in a long time,” Galina said in an interview with Yahoo Sports. “He processes information at a high level. Besides being very accurate, one of his best traits is the detection of coverings and defensive play that will be played before the shot so that he can play as quickly as possible after the snap. He does not wait to declare his defense after the hit, he One step ahead.”

Young’s prowess as a gall, before and after the kidnapper, impressed scouts and analysts, but even Galina can’t completely overlook Young’s size. There haven’t been many players of Young’s size who have had sustained success over the years – Russell Wilson and Drew Breeze are perhaps the strongest examples of younger quarterbacks with long and successful careers. However, the entirety of its game makes it an attractive prospect despite its size.

“Evaluating him as a potential NFL player is a lot more complicated,” Galina said. “In his height and weight, there aren’t many draft quarterbacks, let alone in the first round. We can always compare him to some of the outliers in the shorter quarterback over the past two decades who have been NFL rookies, but are extremes for some reason. If Young was two inches taller, he might be the best quarterback in a long time. That’s how smart he is.”

Young’s draft is being approved even with concerns about its size. NFL teams have been willing to overlook players who don’t have typical size in exchange for other skills. Furthermore, Young holds a special place in the history of the Alabama football program.

He seems to have a little more juice than the three NFL quarterbacks who have played before him and he has something in his wardrobe that none of them had – the Heisman Cup. Young will enter the NFL as a more accomplished player individually than the other three, and Tagovailoa, Jones and Hurts have all shown signs that they could be quarterbacks worthy of a second starting contract in the NFL.

This puts Young in an interesting position regarding the legacy of Crimson Tide, which Sports Illustrated and SEC Network’s SEC Richard Johnson explained to Yahoo Sports.

“It cannot be understated how much Bryce Young means to Alabama,” Johnson said. “Sure, you might think it’s Alabama and they have all the talent in the world, but They don’t beat Texas Earlier this season without him. They didn’t come close to hitting Tennessee as they did without it either. As Bama shied away from defensive offense and geared towards running game in the early Saban era, this team is almost the exact opposite. They are mainly young people.”

Young’s presence represented a bit of a philosophical shift in the way Saban conducted his program. In its early days, Crimson Tide was filled with giants like Andre Smith, Chance Warmack, and Terrence Cody, but as college football (and football in general) became more graphically elegant, players like Young really managed to shine. The fact of the current iteration of football in Alabama is that it needs players like Young to be able to control matches for extended periods of time at a time.

“He has an uncanny ability to work out of pocket and keep playing alive after a crash, and he’s saved Bama’s attack multiple times, especially this year’s edition,” Johnson said. “Last year, he was one of the most under pressure quarterbacks in college football and yet he still delivers the way he did. That can be attributed to his WRs, but his attacking stance is similarly struggling and without a real outstanding receiver, he is probably the best player in the world. His pass is running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

“The thing is, we already saw what Bama would attack without him against a good defense when he pitted him Galen Millroe against Texas A&M. Yes, Milroe is young, but Bama’s previous backups came in games, you know, won the National Championship. Without Young, I don’t think the tide will do that this year.”

Young’s prospects in the NFL will be debated over the next seven months, but his current impact on college football cannot be overstated — from a skill or legacy perspective. Young is one of the most productive players of this age of football, and projects are among the top picks of 2023.

Now, Young and Ohio quarterback CJ Stroud are the top dogs in the quarterback category. For Young, just play the tape and you’ll see why he’d be the face of a franchise even with concerns about his game’s long-term viability. He’s a special talent, and the reason Alabama still has a chance of winning the National Championship in the wake of their loss to Tennessee.
